PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The South Norwalk Railroad Station is located on City owned property and is comprised of the City’s principal railroad station, served by the Metro North commuter rail service to Grand Central Station and New Haven; a 600 car structured parking facility for commuters (located on the westbound side); together with surface parking and undeveloped land (located on the eastbound side).

The rail station site currently affords a minimal degree of integration among and between rail, taxi, airport shuttle, Norwalk Transit District shuttles, private shuttle services and WHEELS, Norwalk’s fixed route bus service. It is the City’s and Transit District’s goal to develop a more formalized coordination among the various modes, together with the necessary physical infrastructure and facilities to support the desired level of coordination.

It is in this context that the District and City seek to define a plan of physical development and improvements at and around the South Norwalk Railroad station site necessary to accommodate a fully integrated inter-modal transportation facility. The potential to incorporate additional development consistent with the SoNo Station Design District zoning regulation and the South Main Corridor Urban Renewal Plan provides an opportunity to create a true “transit oriented development” program to help underwrite the physical improvements to the station facilities.
